Building an at-home yoga practice can be simple, but let’s be honest, it doesn’t always feel that way. Personally, I leaned heavily on physical studios for years—even as a yoga teacher—because practicing yoga at home felt challenging. My home practice was sporadic, mostly because life kept getting in the way, and I felt the only way to stay consistent was by attending a class.

That changed when I began to rethink what a yoga practice could look like. Instead of rushing to class, turning off my brain, and following along, I started listening to my body and figuring out what I truly needed.

Through a bit of trial and error, I discovered that doing yoga at home isn’t just possible—it’s incredibly rewarding. Whether you're figuring out how to do yoga at home because, like me, you live in a smaller community, or you simply prefer practicing in private, here are five things that helped me fall in love with yoga at home. And let’s keep it real: life happens. You’ll miss a day, just like some days you let the dog out into the yard instead of taking a walk around the block. But by treating your yoga practice as an expected part of your routine rather than a bonus, you’ll find more ways to fit it in.

For me, this shift helped remind me to take a 15-minute afternoon break to meditate—because my brain (and sanity) needed it. Sometimes, I didn’t even roll up my mat; I left it open at the foot of my bed so I’d have a visual reminder to pause and move, even if only for 10 minutes.

I promise, even 10 minutes counts as at-home yoga! You don't need an hour-long session to reap the benefits. Start with short, doable practices—just 5 to 10 minutes a day can make a world of difference.
