The Content Lab

content mini course for yoga teachers

Welcome

The reality for many teachers is that we'd love to grow our ability to reach students—whether you teach in a studio, own one, or stick to online classes the way we do at Heart + Bones. Sooner or later, you find yourself looking at your phone or camera, about to press record.

Most of us didn't start teaching because we wanted to be on camera. But here we are. And the upside is real: it can support the growth of your business, shape the experience your students have watching your classes, and help you build the career you actually want as a teacher.

This course is for anyone who hesitates a little—whether that's not knowing how to film well, or looking back at footage and not loving what you see. It's also for anyone already recording who wishes they felt more confident, or is just looking for the process to feel a little easier.

Module 1: Light & Audio Basics

The two things that make or break a video—and the two easiest to get right. Start here before touching anything else.

Lesson 1: The Mindset Before the Setup

Take aways:

  • You likely already have what you need, this is about intention, not gear
  • Caring about light and audio early saves editing headaches later
  • Workflow is allowed to evolve, there's no single right setup
  • Action: take account of your current setup before changing anything

Lesson 2: Your Phone Setup, Step by Step

Take aways:

  • Front vs. back camera, monitoring options (pair to laptop/device, or a mirror), wide angle for solo framing
  • Tripod, lower exposure slightly (why underexposing is safer than overexposing), hold steady (walk-and-talk only if confident)
  • "Moving postcards" b-roll habit: hold steady, let the world move
  • Action: record one 10-second test clip checking framing/stability/exposure

Lesson 3: Light & Audio

Take aways:

  • Why audio matters as much as video — people forgive shaky footage, not bad audio
  • Good natural light example vs. a bad lighting example, side by side
  • Action: redo the test clip checking specifically for clear sound and even light

Module 2: Scripting & Recording

Lesson 1: Why (and How) to Script

Take aways:

  • Free-recording vs. bullet-point script, Ula's honest take on why free-recording created more editing work
  • Bullet-point method: find the one main point (less is more, especially for short clips)
  • For class content: lean on your class plan + a journal by the mat as reference
  • Action: write 3 bullet points for your next video, nothing more

Lesson 2: The Recording Process
